Beach Rocks at Point No Point
Point No Point, on the southwest coast of Vancouver Island, has many breathtaking vistas to capture, however this neat stack of smooth, beach rocks had an appeal all of its own. The stones were found at the beach house, patiently arranged into precarious, but perfect, balance.
This painting is typical of the artist’s work which predominantly focuses on her impressions of nature.
ARTIST BIO
Having returned to the studio after a seemingly long career in graphic design and advertising, Cheryl is painting again. Always a nature lover and an enthusiastic hiker, her paintings reflect where she has explored and what she has experienced. Cheryl maintains that it is the act of painting that is most rewarding.
Christina Craft
About this piece: I have recently been playing around with reflective surfaces and was attracted to this scene. The light was hitting this particular ad in such a way that it looked like the fish was being projected onto the crowd. The image was captured completely in-camera.
Bio: Christina Craft is the owner of FunkyTown Photography and spends a large portion of the year traveling the world on destination wedding assignments. She is also the owner of the Nature Stock Photography Library, which received more than three million visits last year. She placed as a finalist in the Shell BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition and the Nature's Best Photography Contest.

I'm a commercial and fine art photographer living here in Victoria. My commercial work is primarily architectural photography ranging from residential interiors to industrial exteriors. My fine art photography tends to follow themes of the west coast landscape as well as the nude in the landscape. Most of this work is printed in Platinum/Palladium which I find renders these images in a way I find very appealing.

Galleons Lap
I used to be uncomfortable using the term “artist” to describe what I do. To my mind an artist took paint, pencils, paper, clay, and such, and created something that was art. As a photographer I saw myself as someone who observed the world that already existed and made a record of it. The people and the landscapes I photographed were already visually appealing, and they merely whispered to me, metaphorically... “Take my picture – hey you, over here ... there's a photograph here, you just have to find it”.
That was, and often still is, the problem. After catching my attention and calling me over, the picture then hides. It is then up to me to rediscover the image and refine it into a form that the camera can work with. I think that this act of discovery and recording is the art I practice.
In the past few years I have started to refine the images in Photoshop, combining several photographs into one. I find the creative process much more demanding but, for me at least, it is very rewarding. It involves working much more intuitively than I am used to. The time to finish one piece usually spans weeks or even months. I think the results are worth waiting for - and I hope you will too.
The image is called " untitled (to d.flavin) "

I have worked as a commercial photographer for many years. My work calls for me to fulfill the visual and creative challenges designed by a client, a designer, an art director.....for various reasons.....of theirs. I enjoy the demands and opportunities this presents to me. When having very specific technical and creative goals I am nearly always presented with a learning situation. It always improves my range of skills and creative talents.
But often, as with any creative medium, it is always satisfying to cultivate my own challenges and explore subjects driven by my own need to create and explore.
Photography presents a limitless spectrum or subjects and ideas, but I often go back to studying the classic subject of most art forms.....the human figure. I teach students to work with the figure for all the opportunities and boundaries and attitudes that can come with this subject.
There are new views of how the figure can be observed and received when photography is the medium. Sometimes it is viewed with a jaundiced social vision. It demands that the photographer learn from the subject and be aware of the audience.
But there is no more beautiful a subject when observed with well controlled light and a rich sense of aesthetic.
My subjects make themselves available to me from their own sense of creativity and self confidence. They are seldom professional models, but are always people who feel good about themselves and want to test their own boundaries. It is a great learning collaborative exercise.

Kevin House
Kevin House (Illustrator-designer)
I am an illustrator and designer living here in Victoria. After completing a design program in Kingston Ontario in 1991, my wife and I relocated to the coast to pursue our careers balanced with an active outdoor lifestyle.
Years later, spent as a creative designer and art director in some of western Canada's leading design studios and advertising agencies, I decided to shift my focus and go freelance to concentrate on my first love of illustration and identity work. I'm still what you might call an "illustrative designer". Often combining an illustrative element to my design work. The years spent designing have definitely influenced my illustration work. My illustration style could be described as a combination of clean line and design influenced imagery with one foot firmly placed in the elegance of the past, often with a dash of humor. I almost always will have a type component in my work. I work digitally in Adobe Illustrator which allows me to create rich and colourful pieces that are small in file size yet infinitely scalable which appeals to my practical design side.
Victoria Waterfront
Victoria is famous for it’s Inner Harbour. But that's another piece for another time. I chose rather to show a different not usually noticed view that caught my eye one day quite by accident while walking into town. From across the harbour this panorama reminded me of one of those classic illustrations of the Manhattan skyline from a 1930’s era New Yorker magazine cover. With a little creative license I think I managed to get something fairly similar. Those of us who live here see a very different side of Victoria than many who are only visiting. With this image I'm trying to convey a sense of the other side of the city's personality to a degree. There are many areas of Victoria that are uniquely interesting visually and others that offer interesting historical significance. Self directed through my own research and curiosity, I'm trying to present these concepts with illustration work in an ongoing series of locations and business that have each played a small role in creating the "flavour" of present day Victoria. There are many stories yet to be told, a rich, creative minefield that I am more than happy to explore. Perhaps someday the designer in me will put them all into a lovely book. To be continued....

Samantha King
BIO:
Samantha King is a portrait photographer residing in Victoria. While most of her client work is portrait based, she also dabbles in the odd commercial job. Samantha holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts, in Visual Arts, from the University of Victoria and a diploma in Professional Photography from Western Academy of Photography. In conjunction with having her own photography business, Samantha works part time at Western Academy, as the assistant technician.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
I am originally a painter – that’s what I primarily studied while completing my degree. Though I love painting, in my final year of school I moved into the realm of photography. Photography allowed me to explore themes that I was unable to achieve through the process of paint on canvas.
One of these themes is “voyeurism”. I have been intrigued with this topic for many years now. This interest has grown to include explorations into the topics of human relationships, female sexuality, the sex trade and private acts in public places.
I like to photograph found things and places and then juxtapose them with a “staged” element. In doing this, I strive to create a story. I love movie stills and find work that inspires narrative to be captivating. I like for the viewers to form their own interpretation.
“don’t tell mama” is part of a continuing body of work that I started in 2007. This series uses the culture of Las Vegas as a backdrop for a further study of voyeurism.

Terry Zlot
Terry is a self-described "photo-geek" & has long had a passion for the technical processes of digital imaging. Over the past 15 years he has pursued a career pushing the limits of photo printing technology.
Terry started working with Photoshop in 1995, beginning his career in photographic labwork in 1996. Realizing that he had found his niche, he studied photography for 2 years at the Langara Professional Photo Imaging Program. In 2001 he came to Victoria for a vacation, and fell in love with the city. Shortly after moving he started the imaging lab at Prism Photo, beginning the task of moving the consumer photo-lab into the digital age. In the 8 years he spent at at Prism Terry had some amazing success stories, most notably handling the entire printing of the short-lived BC Experience at the Crystal Gardens. In 2008, Terry left to pursue his own vision and started Loupe Imaging, where he focuses on top-notch photo, fine art, and commercial printing.
When not slaving away in the shop, Terry teaches the 2nd year "Digital Darkroom" (Photoshop), and 1st year "Inkjet Printing" course at the Western Academy of Photography.
Photographically Terry enjoys shooting dark, moody images, and mainly shoots landscapes and abstract macro subjects. Panorama stitching is a particular passion - combining multiple frames to create exceptionally sharp images, or to cover extremely wide fields of view. This technique is so successful that Terry shoots everything with a compact Canon A650is, a move he attributes as much to laziness as anything else... "If i had to lug around a full size camera with lenses I'd NEVER manage to take any photos..."

“Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has courage to loose sight of the
Shore.” - Andre Gide
These two pieces are part of an ongoing body of work called "Between Two
Worlds". My starting point is always a digital photograph. I create
multi-layered files to manipulate and explore figure ground relationships,
colour interactions, synthesized forms, and textural elements. Procedurally,
no two are ever the same. I currently employ the use of more painterly
aspects created with digital "brushes". I enjoy the clean, crisp, graphic
quality the digital environment offers me, as well as my ability to explore
and manipulate images.
Current forms of digital imaging (such as thermography, topography, medical,
industrial, and satellite imagery) permeate our culture. Consequently, these pieces
were made while keeping such technologies in mind. A few of
my other sources of inspiration include the work of Francis Bacon, Graham
Coughtry, Claude Breeze, Wassily Kandinsky, Joan Miro and Paul Klee.
Since we (the "collective we") have been interfacing with digital technologies and imagery on an increasing basis, I have often been reminded of Marshall McLuhan. He said, "The artist picks up the message of cultural and technological challenge decades before its transforming impact occurs...then builds a model...for facing the challenge that is at hand". By pushing the boundaries of photographic imagery I am exploring the integration of the human element with this new visual culture.
